Saddle Girth – How tight is too tight?

Are you guilty of doing up your horse’s girth as tight as you can in the belief it gives your saddle and you the best security? Well Australian researchers have found that a girth done up too tightly can have a negative effect on your horse’s performance.

The usual tension applied to a saddle girth to keep a saddle on a Thoroughbred racehorse is around 13kg but researchers found anything over 10kg could alter the horses performance.

Although they still have to work out why, it’s thought that it may force the horse to adopt different breathing patterns involving a greater use of the diaphragm which in turn affects performance. Alternatively, the soft tissue and fluid in the thoracic wall (the part between the neck and abdomen, enclosed by the ribs) could be displaced during exercise.

As yet, no-one knows for sure. Some horses don’t seem particularly affected by girth tightness but others do. Saddle placement also played a part, so more research is needed. Whatever the effects of your saddle girth just make sure you don’t leave your girth too loose.

A Good Start to 2008 ??

A woman was injured and two horses killed as a result of a road traffic accident in Wales on Monday morning (7 January).

On Sunday (6 January) two horses were stuck by cars and killed after straying onto the A20 in Kent

A man was seriously injured and a pony killed when they were involved in a collision with a 4x4 vehicle at 10.45am on 29 December in Newland Common Road, Droitwich

A massive rescue operation is underway in Buckinghamshire, to remove 84 horses, ponies and donkeys from a location where 32 equines have already died. While 31 horses were found dead in a field, three were destroyed as they were considered too ill to be moved or rehabilitated. They are described as being emaciated, deprived of food and water, with overgrown feet and possibly suffering from infectious diseases.

A grisly discovery inside a Cattaraugus County house and barn Saturday led to the arrest of a Randolph man and his girlfriend on animal cruelty charges, state police said. Authorities found a dead draft horse chained to a pole inside a barn at 3199 Route 394 in the Town of Coldspring.

Rochester USA - A woman died of injuries suffered when she fell while trying to stroke a police officer's horse outside a shopping mall. The woman reached out to touch the horse but it pulled away and she lost her balance and fell underneath the animal, her sister said. "It stepped on her several times".

And it's only the 10th of January ??

VOTE – to spend your money

VOTE - to spend your money on bridle pathsThe public are being urged to vote for their favourite equestrian project in the Lottery Fund's - The People's £50 million Lottery Giveaway.

Four projects — three of which have an equestrian element — have been chosen to go forward to a public  vote to win the £50 million.

1. The Eden Project - with plans for a new iconic building (aka. money generating tourist attraction)

2. Sustrans Connect 2 - which includes bridging a gap to connect bridle paths.

3. Sherwood: the Living Legend - which plans to create 95km of new routes for riders in the ancient forest.

4. Black Country as an Urban Park  with a plan for a new 12-mile cycle and bridle path, connecting Walsall and Sandwell town centres.

Telephone and internet voting closes at noon on the 10th December.

I know which one's already got my vote (Sherwood). Definitely not the Eden Project which has turned into a multi-million pound tourist attraction. Who wants to give £50 million to increase their profits?
