Tesco Chicken Out !!
By rji | June 9, 2008

As horse owners we should all be concerned about animal welfare and whether you’re a meat eater, a vegeterian or anything else we should all be promoting better health and welfare for the animals we care for and care about.
Now I personally don’t have £10 to £15 quid to spend on an organically reared free range chicken but I certainly don’t buy battery farmed chickens and I support wholeheartedly, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstalls attempts in trying to change the way our supermarkets source the chickens we eat.
I particularly abhor the way Tesco has dealt with Hugh’s approaches and especially their latest avoidance tactics….
“Ker-ching! That’ll be £86,888 please…”
A few weeks ago I submitted a resolution to Tesco plc with the support of 102 shareholders representing some 3.7 million ordinary shares. The resolution challenges Tesco’s claims about poultry welfare, and urges them to set new minimum welfare standards, including lower stocking densities and more environmental stimuli for the birds……..
Yes, Tesco want about £90,000 from Hugh and their own shareholders before they will allow them a voice.
All credit to Hugh, who instead of being put off by Tesco has launched a major effort to raise the money and continue the campaign, even putting in £30,000 of his own money.
Lend him your support. Sign his petition, bid on his auction or do anything else you can. He has to pay Tesco by Wednesday and he’s holding an auction to reward supporters and contributors… read more here
